What is the difference between a Webmaster and Web Designer?

A web designer creates the design for web sites. A Webmaster, on the other hand, handles all aspects of the web presence including selecting and setting up the host where the website will sit on the internet, registering the business web address name such as: www.yourname.com, works with the customer to create design and content that reflect the business, and maintains all aspects of the web presence, including submissions to the search engines and marketing the web site on the Internet.

Why do businesses delay getting a website?

The most common reasons I hear, from businesses, for not getting a website are time, know-how, money, and reluctance.  It is time consuming to get a web site up and running if you don't have the time or know-how to create and set it up.  Although it can be costly it really doesn't have to be, an expert Webmaster can save you money by selecting a good, but inexpensive, host server and domain registration.  Reluctance is a factor in all new marketing adventures, it is costing you money not having a web site.

Most businesses are so busy with the daily tasks associated with running the business they do not have much free time to learn how to create and maintain a good web site.  Contracting an experienced Webmaster to do the work solves the problem. With a Webmaster all the business has to do is provide the business information and approve the design and content once the Webmaster has completed it.

A web site can be time consuming if you don’t have the know-how. Learning a new program and setting up the web site should be left to an expert Webmaster who already has the know-how and resources to best design and setup your internet presence in a timely, cost effective manner.

Price versus cost.  Price is the up front expense to have your web site designed and set up.  Cost on the other hand is the investment you make in your business over a period of time creating residual income.  Cost should become a negative number over time as your web site brings in more and more profitable business.  Going for price rather than cost can cost you money in the long run.   A web site does not need to be expensive.  Cost varies according to what you need and want on your web site.  Larger web sites cost more than smaller ones.  Don’t skimp on the costs of your web site just to save money.  If you go for price instead of cost you will most likely end up losing money in the long run.  A Webmaster will help determine your needs while taking into consideration your budget.  A good Webmaster can create and setup your web site in a timely manner and save you money by setting up your web site on a reliable host server  and maintaining your web site as needed  Submitting your site to search engines should be included in the cost.  See Tips for Contracting a Webmaster”, below.

Reluctance to invest time and money into a new marketing venture may be the reason a business does not have a web site.  When deciding whether or not your business needs a web site remember other marketing methods target only the local market, where as, a web site will broaden your target market to world wide.  You will be the loser by not getting your web site out there.  You can be sure your competition has a web site and is getting your business.  Your reluctance will end up costing you money, in the long run, by giving business away to your competition. The most successful businesses have active web sites.

Service businesses may be reluctant to have a web presence because they have no physical products to sell so feel they do not need a web site.  Every business needs to have a web site whether they sell products or services.  Another reason for having a web site is informative content.  For instance, a Doctor could have a web site with information about good health, letting his customers know what his office hours are, maybe some of his accomplishments.  Customers like to be informed about the providers of their product and services.  Enlighten your existing customers with a convenient, informative web site.

How will people know I have a web site?

Use your web site and email address in all marketing and correspondences. Have them on your letterhead, business cards, all ads, and tell all of your current customers about your web site, each customer has at least 10 friends to tell about your business.  Your Webmaster will register you in the search engines and people will be able to use these to find your web site.

What can I expect to pay for a web site for my business?

Hosting costs range from $0/mo to $50.00+/mo depending on your needs. For example having a shopping cart on your site, to sell your products, will increase your hosting expenses.   Most hosting services give a better deal for paying annually.  A good Webmaster has a quality inexpensive hosting service that they has used before with great success.  The lowest priced hosing service is not always the best hosting service. Some web hosts will give free set up for certain deals, this can save you up to $90.00 a year.

Registering a domain name (www.yourname.com) can cost up to $35.00 per year.   Your Webmaster should already know the best deal.

Webmaster fees vary.  Some charge by the hour, some charge a flat rate, some charge per page, and some charge a variable rate.  Beware of Webmasters that charge totally by the hour.  They can really be slow and rack up the hours costing you more.  A Webmaster that charges  flat rate fee to start and function or hourly fees after that may be OK for you if you are not particular with the design of your site, as they usually offer a choice of pre designed sites and place your information in them.  There are good Webmasters out there that will charge you only for variable functions they design for your site, this is the most cost effective way for a quality web site with your unique personality in mind because you pay only for what you get with a unique design created just for your web site presence.  How do you know if your Webmaster is the best one for you?  See “Tips for Contracting a Webmaster” below.

What do I need to get started?

A contract will usually be required upon agreement to contract the Webmaster you have chosen to set up and design your web presence.  The Webmaster will want the information for the content of your web site.  Logos, brochures, pictures, and  text  to get started on the design of your site.  During your initial meeting the Webmaster will let you know what is needed from you for your site.  Let the Webmaster know what color scheme your want, what information your want to have on the site, and what your goals for having the site are. If you have a design idea or favorite site in mind show this to the Webmaster.  Make sure to convey your ideas for design and content clearly to the Webmaster.

I already have a web site but am not happy with the design or content. What do I do?

Good question.  A Webmaster can look over your present site, talk with you about what you would like to have, and plan with you to change design or content to your liking and needs.  After this evaluation the Webmaster will redesign your site to your specifications.

How many pages can my web site be?

The number of pages varies from web site to web site.  You can have as few as 1 to as many as you need.  Remember the more pages, interaction, special programming, and functionality your web site has the more it will cost.

How can I add or change content on my web site after it has been designed and functioning. ?

After the site is completed you can make arrangements with the Webmaster to update and change your site as often as you need.  Usually a maintenance contract needs to be signed stating what services you need and how often you need them. The options usually are hourly, weekly, monthly, semi-annually, and yearly.

How do I know if a Webmaster is a good Webmaster?

    Tips for Contracting a Webmaster

  1. Check how much experience the Webmaster has creating and maintaining web sites.

  2. Does the Webmaster have knowledge of special programming like forms, guest books, DHTML, Java, and JavaScript for special effects.

  3. Get a list of web sites the Webmaster has already created, go on the Internet and check them out for design, content, and ease of navigation. Potential customers will not stay at your site if it is not well designed, informative, and user friendly.

  4. Contact the owners of the web sites created by the Webmaster and find out if they are happy with the Webmaster's work.

  5. Ask around to other businesses in your area that already have a web site up and running and get referrals for a Webmaster from them.

  6. Search the Internet for Webmasters, when you find one that appeals to you contact them.   A Webmaster does not need to be in your geographical area to work with you on your web site design. All information can be exchanged via email, fax, and telephone.

  7. A good Webmaster will work with you every step of the way, getting your approval for design and content before putting it on the Internet for the public to see, giving you the web site you need and want.

  8. Last but not least, compare the cost, and how they charge (hourly or variably) and what their initial fees are.  Be sure the cost is competitive for your area.
